Ruby Red & John Joven
Ruby has been regularly practicing partner dance since 2001 when she discovered Lindy Hop. A few years later she was invited to her first blues party and shortly after began traveling nationally to dance. Although she resisted for many years, she eventually succumbed to the urge to teach dance and finds it a rewarding and challenging addition to her dance life. Focusing on principles rather than moves, Ruby aims to share concepts that can be applied to any partner dance and result in dancers who are natural, musical and inventive. James and Mary
Mid-town - Djam Dance
James and Mary got their first taste of swing almost a decade ago, and they have been dancing ever since, stopping only to eat and occasionally change their socks. Since being introduced to the joys of social dancing, they have studied jazz, lindy hop, charleston, balboa, tango, and blues dancing with world-renowned instructors, danced with partners old and young, and spent a lot of time listening to music that their grandparents thought was hip.
Beside being voracious social dancers, James and Mary are experienced teachers, performers, and event organizers. Before moving to Chicago, they taught at venues throughout New England, including Brown University, RISD, MIT, ItsAllSwing Studios (in Boston), and Providence Swings (in Rhode Island). Since 2006, they have been busy spreading their love of rhythmic social dancing by teaching at Fizz, Willowbrook, Big City Swing, and Jumptown (in Madison, WI). As teachers, they are known for their innovative teaching methods and for their ability to help students understand the fundamentals of lead and follow. James brings to class a knowledge of historical styles and music, and a penchant for embarrassing himself in public. Mary brings to class unbridled enthusiasm and an unparalleled ability to put up with James' wackier ideas.

Riley and Ann
South side
Ann DeBord Smith started dancing lindy hop in 1998 after previous dance training in ballet, modern, and jazz. She's been traveling for workshops, competitions, camps, and exchanges since 1999 and taken classes with Steven & Virginie, Bill Borgida, Paul & Sharon, and Peter Strom, among many others. An avid social dancer, her passion for lindy hop is fueled by the dance's versatility, nurturing of creative expression, and musicality. She lived in Boston and danced on the It's All Swing dance team with Shawn Hershey until 2005 when she came to Chicago for medical school. In her teaching she emphasizes the importance of connection between dancers to generate creative movement while helping the follows to find their voice in the dance.
Her most memorable dance experience was being at the Ithaca Exchange in 2000 when the floor collapsed beneath the throngs of dancers. Her most memorable dance was with her husband and fellow dancer, Evan, the day they got married.
